Here’s a highly modified version of my previous shipping container home design, with the addition of a 16′x40′ and a 10′x32′ sun/viewing deck on the top of the home. This adds 960 square feet of patio/deck space to the home. Pretty good for two tiny shipping containers.
Notice the solar panel array on the southern side of the home. The bottom back glass wall faces west to catch the afternoon and evening sun, and the top deck is for viewing those beautiful desert sunsets over the mountaintops. Adding more windows to the south facing side of the home will also capture more of the Sun’s energy. I’m not sure is this is a good thing in the desert, but, it’s probably good in colder climates.
Rear view of home:
This is a more complex design than my $10k 1280 Sqft Ranch Style Container Home using two shipping containers, however the cost of extra materials to complete the railing, upper decks, and extra structural materials needed to support the added weight should still have this shipping container home coming in under $40k including the solar panels.

Hi Eric. I worked on container ships and in Europe as you know ,they are used for building lots of stuff.Since I moved to the US I’m surprised they are so under utilized. We moved to a farm in MN last year to be more ‘sustainable’ Just had a fire that took the garage work shop, stables and two other adjoining rooms. Stock for my 2 little business and all the useful stuff plus some live stock, nasty. Been unemployed so no ‘contents insurance( I know) not a ‘citizen either . build is covered but only for $35.000. quotes say we need new slab and for 56 x50 not finished inside in any shape or form 55,000 plus. Love your ideas, so I was wondering what ideas you would have for max space. useing the roof is very cool as we have a nice view but it does get cold and then humid. seen the r21 glass beads that go in the paint for insulation. What other cheap insulation ideas have you had?. We are also working towards being more self sufficient. Got goats , couple of milk cows, 2 Asian water buffalo, yes not ideal for them in MN winters, lots of lots of other trying to follow Joel Salatins farming model. ‘Food inc, and Fresh’ ,2 must see documentaries! good luck with your en-devours. Appreciate any ideas feed back you may have. Cheers Leo
